Mobility Community – New From CompTIA

I just found out this week I was selected to join the CompTIA Mobility+ certification exam writing and development think tank. I am very excited to have the opportunity to connect with mobility experts and specialists from around the industry. Selfishly, I am more excited about what I’m going to learn than what I will contribute. This is an exciting time for business and technology.

We really are on the forefront of a mobile technology explosion. It is critical to establish best practices and standards that create business value while maintaining relevance in a constantly changing environment. How do you create a best practice that may be obsolete in 90 days? Device functionality and application features are changing so fast many businesses are struggling to find the confidence to implement any strategy.  I see disruptive insecurity about mobility decisions because of the lack of knowledge among end-users and business leaders, the overwhelming number of options, the speed of change,  the newness of the tech, and the lack of time-tested, proven solutions.

We don’t just need good solutions. We need a process. If the environment and the technology are constantly changing, standard solutions aren’t the answer because the problems are constantly changing. Process is the answer. If we develop an effective process for developing strategy, continual learning, management and monitoring of technological change, then our solutions will evolve quickly along with our learning.

My main point is this. I constantly recommend to business leaders to view mobile technology as a cultural change. The business culture must be characterized by constant learning, continual improvement, research, training, and  what I call positive social engineering. This means we need to be intentional about the skills, thoughts and behaviors our workers and consumers develop with respect to mobile technology and its use.

Master Mobility

Mobility at its essence can be a significant force for productivity and positive change, or it can be a boondoggle and an enormous distraction. The good news is that this story doesn’t write itself. The overall impact of mobile technology will not be determined by the tech itself. It will be determined by us. It will be determined by you.

The CompTIA Mobility team will do research and write the exam, but you and I together will create the success. It’s going to be fun. And if you have a new piece of mobile tech hanging out of your ear or wrapped around your wrist, you will look cool doing it!

Keep movin…
